Nou okee, toch maar even wat serieus op dit blog. Ik doe namelijk genoeg. Zo schreef ik donderdag een recensie <\/a>voor de film Tropic Thunder<\/em>, te lezen op Eeuwig Weekend en rond ik zojuist dit stuk af voor een nieuw blog dat ik sinds kort bijhoud voor Radio 6: Bowie.radio6.nl<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Een bijzondere nieuwe Bowie cd die uit zou zijn gekomen, schreef ik in de introductiepost. En ik loog niet. Het betreft hier namelijk een compilatieschijf met 12 nummers, persoonlijk uitgekozen door mr. Bowie himself. Ofwel: welke tracks uit zijn back-catalogue vindt Bowie nu eigenlijk zelf de moeite waard? Een interessante vraag, wat een interessante cd heeft opgeleverd: iSelect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Deze schijf verscheen eerder als bijlage bij de Britse krant Mail On Sunday<\/a>, maar is nu ook uitgebracht als cd met boekje met tekst en uitleg van de man. Bowie: “Twelve songs that I particularly like. Few of them are well known, but many of them still get sung at my concerts… usually by me!”<\/em><\/p>\n

Een bijzondere plaat indeed<\/em> dus, temeer omdat de ‘grote’ hits ontbreken: er staan slechts drie singles op. En vooral ook het nummer ‘Some Are’ uit 1976 is uniek, daar deze enkel op de heruitgave van Low<\/em> staat. Bowie zegt hierover:<\/p>\n

“A quiet little piece Brian Eno and I wrote in the Seventies. The cries of wolves in the background are sounds that you might not pick up on immediately. Unless you’re a wolf. They’re almost human, both beautiful and creepy. Images of the failed Napoleonic force stumbling back through Smolensk. Finding the unburied corpses of their comrades left from their original advance on Moscow. Or possibly a snowman with a carrot for a nose; a crumpled Crystal Palace Football Club admission ticket at his feet. A Weltschmerz [world weariness] indeed. Send in your own images, children, and we’ll show the best of them next week.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Een persoonlijke favoriet, waarvan ik altijd gehoopt had deze eens live te horen (tevergeefs) is ‘Lady Grinning Soul’. Leuk om te lezen dat ook Bowie achter dit nummer staat. Nog zo’n prachtnummer is ‘Repetition’, een track van Lodger<\/em> uit 1979. Deze speelde Bowie voor het eerst live in 1999, tijdens een TV-opname voor ‘Storytellers’ van VH-1. Een sterk nummer, dat het onderwerp \u2018wife-beating\u2019 behandeld. Bowie vertelt met een monotome stem het verhaal van Johnny, een grote gast, die nogal gefrustreerd is, want \u2018he could have had a Cadillac If the school had taught him right\u2019.<\/em> En erger nog: \u2018He could have married Anne with the blue silk blouse\u2019.<\/em> In plaats daarvan zit hij opgescheept met een vrouw die niet eens kan koken. Johnny zegt: \u2018What\u2019s the good of me working when you can\u2019t damn cook?\u2019.<\/em> En dus slaat hij haar. Op de maat van de muziek, die repetitief voortdreunt. Een prachtzin is: \u2018I guess the bruises won\u2019t show if she wears long sleeves. But the space in her eyes shows through\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Bowie: “I had known more instances of this behaviour than I would have preferred to have been made aware of and could not for the life of me imagine how someone could hit a woman, not only once but many, many times.”<\/em><\/p>\n
